Management is key to pasture productivity and profitability.

Description

Pasture mixes are very popular for many reasons. They are versatile and more forgiving of adverse soil and climate conditions than monocultures. However, mixes do require good management to keep ratios consistent.

Peak Forage uses a lot of trial experiments from across the Midwest to help put together compatible mixes. We also are able to do custom mixes to meet your needs

Management

Management is key to pasture productivity and profitability. A pasture requires attention in order to keep ratios consistent from year to year.

A general recommendation for pasture mix management is to use the equivalent of about 40 pounds of N to kick-start the seedlings. To encourage plant density, clip the pasture when the seedlings are about 6 to 8 inches high and do not graze until plants are firmly rooted. Using rotational grazing is best to promote persistence and adding manure or fertilizer in the fall will help with winter hardiness.

Establishment

An early fall planting is best using a Brillion seeder or drilled 1/4 inch deep into a well prepared seed bed. If a Brillion seeder or drill is not available, the seed can be broadcast and rolled firm with a culti-packer. Make sure weeds are controlled before establishment. Spring planting is possible and is what is done in most of the upper Midwest, but competition must be suppressed to ensure success.
